How McGill University calculates GPA
McGill University (Quebec) calculates GPA as a credit-weighted average: multiply each course's grade points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. The detail that matters is the grade scale.
The McGill grade scale — what makes it specific
A+ rule: McGill maps letters to a 4.0 GPA: A = 4.0, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3 … A+ is not used as a separate boosted value (A is the top at 4.0).
Failing grade: McGill University uses "F" for a failing grade (0.0).
Repeated courses & grade replacement
Repeated-course and satisfactory-standing rules are set by each McGill faculty; confirm with your faculty.
Academic standing
McGill recognises top students on the Dean's Honour List / Principal's Honour List.
Good to know
McGill reports grades as letters aligned to a 4.0 GPA, and historically shows percentage context too. Note McGill's pass mark is typically 60% (stricter than the 50% common elsewhere in Canada). A = 4.0 is the top of the scale.
