WAEC / WASSCE to US GPA

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) issues the WASSCE with grades from A1 (Excellent) to F9 (Fail). US and Canadian universities usually want these expressed on the 4.0 GPA scale. Map each subject grade below, then average across your subjects.

GradeMeaningRangeUS GPA (est.)
A1Excellent75–1004.0
B2Very Good70–743.7
B3Good65–693.3
C4Credit60–643.0
C5Credit55–592.7
C6Credit50–542.3
D7Pass45–492.0
E8Pass40–441.0
F9Fail0–390.0

What to watch out for

WAEC marking is strict: an A1 starts at 75%, whereas a US A starts around 93%. That means a strong African student can look 'average' if percentages are compared directly — so use the letter-grade mapping above, not the raw percentage. For university admission you usually need at least five credits (C6 or better) including English and Mathematics.

Credential evaluation

For formal evaluation, WES verifies WAEC results through the exam body using your examination number; transcripts and a scratch card / e-PIN may be required. Many UK universities accept WAEC directly (comparable to GCSE/O-level); some Canadian provinces accept it directly too.

These are estimated equivalents for planning. US universities and evaluators (WES/ECE) apply their own policies — confirm with your target school.
