Quick answer: OMSAS converts every course grade to a 4.0 value with OUAC’s Undergraduate Grade Conversion Table, on the scale OUAC lists for your university, and weights it by course length (full-year 2, half 1). Your cumulative OMSAS GPA includes repeated and failed courses. The scale matters: 76% is 3.00 on Scale 3 (Western, Guelph) but 3.70 on Scale 4.

How to use it
Pick your university: the calculator uses the conversion scale OUAC lists for it. Enter each course with its year, its length and your grade as it appears on your transcript (a percentage, or a letter where your university reports letters). Enter repeated courses twice if both attempts are on your transcript.
How OMSAS calculates your GPA
From OUAC’s OMSAS GPA Calculations page (updated July 6, 2026): “OMSAS uses a 4.0 scale. We will convert your grades using the Undergraduate Grade Conversion Table and the scale noted for your university in the table. Do not attempt to reconcile alpha grades to any of the percentage scales.” “Where both letter and percentage grades are reported on the transcript, we will use the percentage grade, except for the University of British Columbia, where we will use letter grades.”
“We calculate the cumulative average by adding all the course weights and all the converted grades, then dividing the total course weights into the total converted grades. Note: The cumulative average is not an ‘average of the averages’.”

A year with the equivalent of at least 3 full courses or 6 half courses is full-time (OMSAS duration F); summer, part-time and intersession courses in a calendar year are grouped together (duration S).

What OMSAS leaves out
OUAC lists these as not normally included in the OMSAS GPA: college courses (even if transfer credit is granted), challenge-for-credit courses, continuing education programs, graduate courses, undergraduate courses taken as part of a graduate program, consecutive Bachelor of Education programs, naturopathic and chiropractic medicine, Doctor of Medicine programs, courses graded “Pass” or “Credit”, and International Baccalaureate and Advanced Placement courses. Grades from outside Canada and the US are not converted.
Worked example
A Western student (Scale 3) with full-year courses at 84%, 76% and 90% in one year: 84% is 3.70, 76% is 3.00 and 90% is 4.00, so the year’s GPA is (3.70 × 2 + 3.00 × 2 + 4.00 × 2) ÷ 6 = 3.57. On Scale 4 the same marks would be 3.90, 3.70 and 3.90, a 3.83.
