OLSAS GPA Calculator

Quick answer: OLSAS converts every course grade to a 4.0 value with OUAC’s Undergraduate Grade Conversion Table, on the scale OUAC lists for your university, and weights it by course length (full-year 2, half 1). Your cumulative OLSAS GPA counts every attempt, including failed and repeated courses. Each law school then uses your record its own way: Toronto takes your best three full-time years, Queen’s your top two.

Unofficial estimate. Your OLSAS GPA is calculated by OUAC from your official transcripts and appears in your application from December; each law school may assess your record differently.

How to use it

Pick your university: the calculator uses the conversion scale OUAC lists for it. Enter each course with its year, its length and your grade as it appears on your transcript (a percentage, or a letter where your university reports letters). Mark summer, part-time and intersession courses as “Summer”. The table under the result shows each year’s GPA and what each Ontario law school says it looks at.

How OLSAS calculates your GPA

From OUAC’s OLSAS GPA Calculations page: “OLSAS uses a 4.0 scale. We will convert your grades using the Undergraduate Grade Conversion Table and the scale noted for your university in the table. Do not attempt to reconcile alpha grades to any of the percentage scales.” “Where both letter and percentage grades are reported on the transcript, we will use the percentage grade, with the exception of the University of British Columbia, where we will use letter grades.”

“We calculate the cumulative average by adding all the course lengths and converted grades and dividing the total course lengths into the total OLSAS values from the conversion table. Note: The cumulative average is not an ‘average of the averages’.”

Years follow “the Ontario traditional academic year system”: two semesters make one year. A year with the equivalent of at least 3 full courses or 6 half courses is full-time (OLSAS duration F); summer, part-time and intersession courses in a calendar year are grouped together (duration S).

OUAC Undergraduate Grade Conversion Table

OUAC’s table, updated September 15, 2025, converts individual grades. A percentage scale applies to percentage marks and a letter scale to letter grades.

How each Ontario law school uses your GPA

OUAC: “Each law school may use a different GPA than OLSAS calculates in the undergraduate academic record, based on its own admission criteria.” What the eight schools say:

Law schoolHow it uses your GPA (its own words)Source
University of Toronto (Jackman Law)“The admission GPA is calculated on undergraduate courses only, using the best three academic years (traditionally using both the fall and winter sessions per year) of full-time study from all years of undergraduate study.”Admissions page
read 2026-10-02
Queen's University“To be a competitive applicant, you should have at least an A- average (grade point average [GPA] of 3.7) in the top 2 years of your undergraduate degree program at a full course load and an LSAT score of at least 160.”OLSAS guide page
August 17, 2026
Western University“The Admissions Committee considers the highest LSAT score and cumulative grade point average (GPA), which is based on all undergraduate university courses you received grades for. This includes grades obtained during spring and summer terms and on academic exchanges. However, if your cumulative GPA is not competitive, we will give greater weight to your last 2 years of full-time (or equivalent) undergraduate university study (defined as a minimum of 20 semestered courses).”OLSAS guide page

Osgoode Hall Law School (York)“Successful applicants generally have at least a cumulative A- average (includes all years of undergraduate study) and an LSAT in the 85th percentile or better.”OLSAS guide page

University of Ottawa“Undergraduate academic performance is a significant factor in the evaluation process. Most successful applicants have a CGPA of A- or above. CGPA calculations are based on undergraduate grades.”OLSAS guide page

Toronto Metropolitan University (Lincoln Alexander)“We will calculate the cumulative GPA for all your years of undergraduate study. We do not set a minimum GPA requirement for consideration. We calculate your GPA using the courses you completed by the end of the summer term in the year you apply.”OLSAS guide page

Lakehead University (Bora Laskin)“We use a cumulative GPA calculated by OLSAS that takes into consideration all courses taken at the undergraduate level from an accredited university.”OLSAS guide page

Where a school pools several years (Toronto, Queen’s, Western’s last two years), the calculator pools the courses of those years with their weights, the same way OLSAS builds a cumulative GPA, rather than averaging the yearly GPAs.

Worked example

A Western student (Scale 3) with full-year courses at 84%, 76% and 90% in one year: 84% is 3.70, 76% is 3.00 and 90% is 4.00. Each full-year course weighs 2, so the year’s GPA is (3.70 × 2 + 3.00 × 2 + 4.00 × 2) ÷ 6 = 21.40 ÷ 6 = 3.57. The same marks on Scale 4 would give 3.90, 3.70 and 3.90, a 3.83: the scale matters.

Frequently asked questions

How does OLSAS calculate my GPA?
OLSAS converts each course grade to a 4.0 value with OUAC's Undergraduate Grade Conversion Table, using the scale OUAC lists for your university, then weights each course by its length (full-year 2, half 1, three-quarter 1.5, lab 0.5). Your cumulative GPA is the total of value × weight divided by the total weight: OUAC notes it “is not an ‘average of the averages’”.
Does OLSAS count failed and repeated courses?
Yes. OLSAS includes “All courses and marks, including failed, incomplete, repeated and supplementary courses, and courses extra to degree requirements.” It leaves out “challenge for credit” courses and courses without a specific grade, such as a pass.
Is the OLSAS GPA the same as the OMSAS GPA?
Both use the same OUAC Undergraduate Grade Conversion Table. What differs is how each school then uses your record: for law, each school “may use a different GPA than OLSAS calculates”, such as Toronto's best three years or Queen's top two.
Which years count for the University of Toronto?
Toronto says its admission GPA uses “the best three academic years (traditionally using both the fall and winter sessions per year) of full-time study”. The calculator picks your three full-time years with the highest GPAs and pools their courses.
What counts as a full-time year?
OLSAS groups a year as full-time (duration F) when it has “the equivalent of a minimum of 3 full-time courses or 6 half courses”, which is a course weight of 6. Summer, part-time and intersession courses are grouped separately (duration S); they count in your cumulative GPA but are not a year.
What if my marks have decimals?
OUAC's table lists whole percentages. The calculator places a mark in the band whose range contains it, so 89.6 on Scale 3 falls in 85–89 (3.90). OUAC does not say how it treats decimal marks, so check your OLSAS GPA in your application once it is posted in December.
Do grades from outside Canada and the US count?
No. “We process grades from countries other than Canada and the US as non-convertible. We will forward the transcript to the law schools you applied to for evaluation.” US grades are converted with OUAC's separate rules for American institutions, which this calculator does not cover.
