How Canadian universities grade
Canada has no single national scale. Depending on the province and university you'll see percentages, a 4.0 or 4.3 GPA, or a 9- or 12-point letter scale. Ontario schools lean on percentages; many others use a 4.0. Because of this, a foreign transcript is almost always run through a credential evaluation before it's compared to Canadian applicants.
Which ECA (credential evaluator) do you need?
Canada calls it an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA), and which body you use depends on the purpose:
- University admission: individual universities accept reports from WES Canada, IQAS (Alberta), ICES (BC), CES (University of Toronto), or ICAS — check each school's list.
- Express Entry / PR immigration: IRCC accepts a specific set of designated organisations (WES, IQAS, ICES, CES, ICAS, and profession-specific bodies like the MCC for physicians). An ECA for immigration is not automatically accepted for admission and vice-versa.
Order the report the specific school or IRCC stream requires; they are not interchangeable.
For graduate applicants
Canadian master's programmes typically want the equivalent of a Canadian B / ~3.0 on a 4.0 (often a 70–75%+ average in the final two years), with competitive and funded programmes expecting more. Because Canadian and US 4.0 conversions from foreign grades are broadly aligned, the US 4.0 estimate from our per-country converters is a close proxy for the Canadian 4.0 — and where a school uses percentages, use the percentage band shown on each converter.
For undergraduate applicants
Undergrad admission is based on your secondary-school results converted to the province's scale (often a percentage). Minimums vary by program and university; competitive programs (engineering, business, health sciences) run much higher than the stated floor.
