Unofficial estimate for planning only. Official applications require a WES/ECE credential evaluation; actual results vary by institution tier and course rigor.
How China grades convert to US GPA
WES-style band mapping from the 100-point scale.
Chinese universities mark out of 100. US evaluators apply a band mapping (e.g. 90+ → 4.0). The Gaokao is the national university-entrance exam, separate from university grades.
Grade equivalents at a glance
| China grade | US GPA (est.) | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 90–100 | ~3.7–4.0 | Excellent |
| 82–89 | ~3.3–3.7 | Very good |
| 75–81 | ~2.7–3.0 | Good |
| 68–74 | ~2.0–2.3 | Pass |
| 60–67 | ~1.0 | Bare pass |
Is this competitive for US admission?
US programmes typically want roughly an 80+ average for a 3.0+ equivalent. Chinese grading varies sharply between institutions, so evaluators weight the school. Confirm each programme.
Credential evaluation (WES / ECE)
WES requires transcripts and often a degree certificate verified through CHESICC (China's official academic verification). Self-submitted records are not accepted.
For the credit-weighted multi-course version, see the WES iGPA calculator. Indian students wanting a percentage instead can use the CGPA to percentage tool.
