How the China grading scale works

Most Chinese universities grade on a 0–100 percentage scale and report a credit-weighted average. 90+ is Excellent and 60 is the minimum pass; US evaluators convert band-by-band.

Grade scale

Grade / rangeMeaning (≈ US)
90–100Excellent 优秀 (A)
80–89Good 良好 (B)
70–79Satisfactory 中等 (C)
60–69Pass 及格 (D)
0–59Fail 不及格 (F)

Formula

Weighted average = sum(score x credits) / sum(credits). US 4.0 band rule: 90–100 -> 4.0, 80–89 -> 3.0, 70–79 -> 2.0, 60–69 -> 1.0, below 60 -> 0.0.

Worked example

An 85% weighted average falls in the 80–89 band -> Good (B) -> 3.0 on the US 4.0 scale.
