IB Diploma to US GPA
The International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma scores out of 45 (six subjects at 1–7, plus up to 3 bonus points). US universities map the total — and individual subject grades — to the 4.0 scale. Use the table below.
| Grade | Meaning | Range | US GPA (est.) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 42–45 | Top tier | — | 4.0 |
| 38–41 | Excellent | — | 3.8 |
| 34–37 | Very good | — | 3.5 |
| 30–33 | Good | — | 3.1 |
| 27–29 | Solid pass | — | 2.8 |
| 24–26 | Diploma awarded | — | 2.5 |
| < 24 | Below diploma | — | 0.0 |
What to watch out for
An IB total of 24 is the minimum for the diploma; 30+ is a strong result and 40+ is exceptional (worldwide averages sit in the low 30s). Per-subject, a 7 is the top grade. US universities frequently grant credit for Higher Level (HL) subjects scored 5–7.
Credential evaluation
IB is internationally standardised, so evaluation is consistent. For US credit, check each university's IB credit policy — HL subjects at 5+ commonly earn college credit or advanced standing.
These are estimated equivalents for planning. US universities and evaluators (WES/ECE) apply their own policies — confirm with your target school.
