Frequently asked questions

Where do these figures come from?
Every figure comes from each college's own Common Data Set (CDS): the acceptance rate from item C1 (first-time, first-year applicants and admits), SAT and ACT ranges from item C9, and the average high school GPA from item C12. Each college page names the CDS year and links to the document. No figures come from third-party websites.
Why do some colleges show no average GPA?
Many colleges leave item C12 of their Common Data Set blank. When they do, no GPA is shown rather than a figure from another source; the acceptance rate and test-score ranges are still shown.
Why is a GPA above 4.0 shown?
Some colleges report a weighted average in their Common Data Set. It is shown as reported and marked above 4.0; compare it with your weighted GPA, not your unweighted one.
How is the admission chance estimated?
It starts from the college's acceptance rate and shifts it up or down by how your GPA compares with the college's average GPA (and your SAT with its range, where reported). It does not see essays, course rigor or major, so treat it as a rough guide, not a prediction.
