The 10-point scale, the 4-point GPA, and what actually converts — sourced to the regulation.
Start here: check your transcript. If it already shows a 4-point GPA, that is your official figure and you do not need to convert anything. Vietnamese universities on the credit system calculate it per course under MOET Circular 08/2021. If you only have a 10-point average, the per-course calculator is the method the regulation prescribes.

The table that converts the wrong thing →
A widely-shared table headed “according to Circular 08/2021” reproduces the cumulative-GPA classification bands and labels them a per-course conversion.
The short version
- Course marks are out of 10, converted to a letter: A from 8.50, B from 7.00, C from 5.50, D from 4.00, F below 4.00.
- Letters become points — A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1, F=0 — then a credit-weighted average gives your GPA.
- These bands have not changed since 2007. Decision 43/2007 and Circular 08/2021 state the same ranges, and so does the 2026 draft replacement.
- Year-based (niên chế) institutions calculate on the 10-point scale and do not produce a 4-point GPA at all.
- Converting one cumulative number instead of each course collapses your whole transcript into a single band, so it can only return a whole number. The US Embassy in Hanoi calls the direct conversion “completely inaccurate”.

Convert a Vietnamese grade to another country
Planning estimates, with one exception: Germany publishes an official conversion formula, so that result is computed rather than estimated. Every other destination assesses Vietnamese qualifications on its own terms — treat those as a starting point and check the receiving institution’s requirements.

7-point GPA or a WAM, depending on the university.
Vietnam → Canada
Percentage and letter grades, 4.0 or 4.3 scales.
Vietnam → Germany verified
The only one of these that is not an estimate. Germany publishes an official formula (the Modified Bavarian Formula) and we implement it exactly.

The grading figures across these pages are read from the regulations themselves, not from third-party tables. Where a document could not be obtained, we say so.
