How University of Victoria calculates GPA
University of Victoria (British Columbia) calculates GPA as a credit-weighted average: multiply each course's grade points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. The detail that matters is the grade scale.
The UVic grade scale — what makes it specific
A+ rule: UVic uses a 9-POINT scale (not 4.0): A+=9, A=8, A-=7, B+=6, B=5, B-=4, C+=3, C=2, D=1, F=0. A+ is the top at 9. Note: there is no D- and no C- in the point ladder.
Failing grade: University of Victoria uses "F" for a failing grade (0.0).
Repeated courses & grade replacement
GPA excludes COM, INP, N/X and F/X grades; F and N grades ARE included. A projected GPA (worst case, ungraded = 0) is used internally for standing. Confirm repeat handling with the registrar.
Academic standing
Sessional GPA sets academic standing. Percentage bands: A+ 90-100, A 85-89, A- 80-84, B+ 77-79, B 73-76, B- 70-72, C+ 65-69, C 60-64, D 50-59, F below 50.
Good to know
UVic is one of the few Canadian schools on a 9-point letter scale rather than 4.0 — A+ = 9, A = 8, down to D = 1 and F = 0. A generic 4.0 calculator will badly misstate a UVic GPA. Unlike York's 9-point system, UVic uses minus grades (A-, B-) and has no D+ or E grade.
