How Arizona State University calculates GPA
Arizona State University (Arizona) calculates GPA as a credit-weighted average: multiply each course's grade points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. The detail that matters is the grade scale.
The ASU grade scale — what makes it specific
A+ rule: A+ may be awarded (internally 4.33) but the cumulative GPA is capped at 4.00.
Failing grade: Arizona State University uses "E" for a failing grade (0.0).
Repeated courses & grade replacement
ASU uses 'E' (not 'F') for failing. A 'D' or 'E' may be repeated once at ASU; the repeat removes the original D/E from the GPA (grade replacement), done automatically after grades post. Not available to students who have already graduated.
Academic standing
Minimum 2.00 cumulative GPA for good standing / graduation.
Good to know
ASU is unusual in two ways: it uses 'E' instead of 'F' for failing, and there is no D+ or D- (just D = 1.0). Although A+ carries 4.33 internally, your cumulative GPA cannot exceed 4.00. Special failing marks EN (never participated), EU (stopped participating) and XE (academic dishonesty) all count as E for GPA.
