How Indiana University Bloomington calculates GPA
Indiana University Bloomington (Indiana) calculates GPA as a credit-weighted average: multiply each course's grade points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. The detail that matters is the grade scale.
The Indiana grade scale — what makes it specific
A+ rule: Indiana uses a 4.0 plus/minus scale; A+ and A are both 4.0 (A+ capped). Full set down to D-=0.7, F=0.
Failing grade: Indiana University Bloomington uses "F" for a failing grade (0.0).
Repeated courses & grade replacement
Distinctive grade-replacement: on a retake, only the new grade counts and the old grade is changed to an 'X' (excluded from GPA, hours not counted). Available for up to three courses / 10 credit hours (campus policy may allow more).
Academic standing
Minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA. 'FN' marks failure due to non-attendance.
Good to know
Indiana uses a standard 4.0 plus/minus scale (A+ capped at 4.0). Its notable feature is grade replacement: when you retake a course, the original grade becomes an 'X' and drops out of your GPA, with only the new grade counting — available for up to three courses or 10 credit hours.
