How University of Michigan calculates GPA
University of Michigan (Michigan) calculates GPA as a credit-weighted average: multiply each course's grade points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. The detail that matters is the grade scale.
The U-M grade scale — what makes it specific
A+ rule: A+ carries the same grade points as an A and does not raise GPA above 4.0.
Failing grade: University of Michigan uses "E" for a failing grade (0.0).
Repeated courses & grade replacement
When a course is repeated, ALL attempts remain on the transcript and ALL grades are included in the GPA — Michigan does not remove earlier grades for repeats (no grade replacement). This is stricter than schools that count only the latest attempt.
Academic standing
Standards vary by school/college within U-M; many use a 2.0 minimum for good standing.
Good to know
Michigan uses 'E' for failing in many programs. Crucially, repeated courses do NOT replace the earlier grade — every attempt counts in your GPA, unlike ASU or Berkeley. Plan retakes accordingly.
