How University of Minnesota calculates GPA
University of Minnesota (Minnesota) calculates GPA as a credit-weighted average: multiply each course's grade points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. The detail that matters is the grade scale.
The Minnesota grade scale — what makes it specific
A+ rule: Minnesota uses a 4.0 plus/minus scale. A+ and D- are generally NOT used (A+ appears only in specific Law courses and is capped at 4.0).
Failing grade: University of Minnesota uses "F" for a failing grade (0.0).
Repeated courses & grade replacement
For undergraduates, when a course is repeated both attempts appear on the transcript but only the most recent grade counts in the GPA. Graduate students keep all attempts.
Academic standing
Minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA. S/N (Satisfactory/No-credit) grades don't affect GPA. All UMN campuses share the scale.
Good to know
Minnesota uses a standard 4.0 plus/minus scale, but with a twist: A+ and D- are generally not awarded (A+ exists only in certain Law courses, capped at 4.0), so the practical top grade is a plain A = 4.0. Undergraduate repeats use the most-recent grade.
