How University of South Florida calculates GPA
University of South Florida (Florida) calculates GPA as a credit-weighted average: multiply each course's grade points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. The detail that matters is the grade scale.
The South Florida grade scale — what makes it specific
A+ rule: USF uses a 4.0 plus/minus scale; A is the maximum (4.0), and each plus adds a third of a point while each minus subtracts a third (A-=3.67, B+=3.33, ... D-=0.67, F=0). A+ where used does not exceed 4.0.
Failing grade: University of South Florida uses "F" for a failing grade (0.0).
Repeated courses & grade replacement
Grade forgiveness: an unsatisfactory grade can be removed from the GPA on a USF retake. It can be used a maximum of three times, only for courses attempted and retaken at USF, and not to earn graduation honors.
Academic standing
Minimum 2.0 GPA. GPA is not rounded. (Unlike FSU/UCF's 0.25 steps, USF uses 0.33 steps.)
Good to know
USF uses third-of-a-point plus/minus steps (A-=3.67, B+=3.33) with A as the 4.0 maximum — note this differs from the other big Florida schools (UCF and FSU) which use 0.25 steps. USF's grade-forgiveness policy is capped at three uses and only applies to courses retaken at USF.
