How Stanford University calculates GPA
Stanford University (California) calculates GPA as a credit-weighted average: multiply each course's grade points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. The detail that matters is the grade scale.
The Stanford grade scale — what makes it specific
A+ rule: Stanford uses a 4.3 scale: A+ = 4.3 (a real boost above 4.0), A = 4.0, A- = 3.7, down to F = 0. A+ grades are rare.
Failing grade: Stanford University uses "F" for a failing grade (0.0).
Repeated courses & grade replacement
NP (Not Passed) counts as 0.0 in the GPA. CR/NC and S grades are excluded. Confirm repeat specifics with the registrar.
Academic standing
Stanford is on the quarter system; GPA is weighted by course units on the 4.3 scale.
Good to know
Stanford uses a 4.3 scale where an A+ is worth 4.3 — so a Stanford GPA can exceed 4.0. A+ grades are awarded but rare. Stanford is on the quarter system, and 'NP' (Not Passed) counts as 0.0 in the GPA even though CR/NC grades don't. State the 4.3 scale when reporting your GPA externally.
