How Texas Tech University calculates GPA
Texas Tech University (Texas) calculates GPA as a credit-weighted average: multiply each course's grade points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. The detail that matters is the grade scale.
The Texas Tech grade scale — what makes it specific
A+ rule: Texas Tech computes the cumulative GPA using whole-letter grades ONLY: A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1, F=0. Instructors may record a plus or minus, but +/- are NOT used in the cumulative GPA.
Failing grade: Texas Tech University uses "F" for a failing grade (0.0).
Repeated courses & grade replacement
Grade replacement: retaking a course you earned a D or F in, and scoring C or better, drops the old grade from the GPA (it stays on the transcript marked 'Grade Replaced').
Academic standing
Minimum 2.0 GPA for good standing; some colleges (e.g. Engineering) require higher.
Good to know
Texas Tech is a whole-letter school for GPA purposes: even though an instructor can put a plus or minus on a transcript grade, the cumulative GPA only uses A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1, F=0 — no fractional steps. It also has a generous grade-replacement policy: retake a D/F and earn a C or better, and the old grade drops out of your GPA.
