How University of California, Berkeley calculates GPA
University of California, Berkeley (California) calculates GPA as a credit-weighted average: multiply each course's grade points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. The detail that matters is the grade scale.
The UC Berkeley grade scale — what makes it specific
A+ rule: A+ may be awarded for extraordinary achievement but carries the same 4.0 as an A (no boost above 4.0).
Failing grade: University of California, Berkeley uses "F" for a failing grade (0.0).
Repeated courses & grade replacement
When you repeat a course, both grades stay on the transcript but only the most recent grade counts in the GPA — this applies to the first 12 graded units of repeated courses. Repeating a course more than once needs Dean's approval.
Academic standing
Undergraduates must keep a 2.0 cumulative GPA for good standing; graduate students need 3.0.
Good to know
Berkeley uses the standard UC plus/minus scale. A+ is real but does not exceed 4.0. Only UC coursework (plus UCB Extension XB/XBW and EAP) counts toward the GPA; courses at non-UC schools do not. P/NP and Incomplete carry no grade points.
