How Yale University calculates GPA
Yale University (Connecticut) calculates GPA as a credit-weighted average: multiply each course's grade points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. The detail that matters is the grade scale.
The Yale grade scale — what makes it specific
A+ rule: Yale uses a standard 4.0 plus/minus scale; an A+ where given counts as 4.0 (capped, no boost).
Failing grade: Yale University uses "F" for a failing grade (0.0).
Repeated courses & grade replacement
Repeat rules vary; Yale College has limited course-repeat allowances. Confirm with the registrar.
Academic standing
GPA has appeared on Yale undergraduate transcripts since Fall 2004. Credit/D/Fail option is available for exploring courses.
Good to know
Yale uses a standard 4.0 plus/minus scale with A+ capped at 4.0. Yale doesn't compute class rank, and it offers a Credit/D/Fail option that lets students take a course without the grade affecting GPA. GPA has only appeared on transcripts since Fall 2004.
