How to convert any country's grades to a US GPA

Every national grading system is different — some run high-is-best, some low-is-best, some out of 10, 20 or 100 — but the process for turning any of them into a US 4.0 GPA follows the same steps.

Step 1: identify the scale and its pass mark

Find the maximum grade, the minimum pass, and the direction. A German 1.0 is the best; a French 20 is the best; an Indian 10 is the best. Knowing the pass mark matters because a passing grade should never convert to a US 0.0.

Step 2: convert band by band, not by one multiplier

Step 3: weight by credits
