How Fairfield University calculates GPA

Fairfield University calculates GPA as a credit-weighted average: multiply each course’s grade points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. The detail that matters is the grade scale.

The Fairfield grade scale — what makes it specific

A+ rule: On the Fairfield scale, there is no A+ — A = 4.0 is the top grade, and there are no plus or minus grades at all.

Failing grade: Fairfield University uses "F" for a failing grade (0.0).

Repeated courses & grade replacement

All attempts count. When a failed course is repeated the new grade is recorded, but the original grade stays on the transcript and remains in the cumulative average; for a repeated passing course both grades are averaged into the GPA and the repeat credit does not count toward the degree.

Dean’s List

Fairfield University names students to its Dean’s List at a term GPA of 3.50 with 12 credit hours, with no outstanding or incomplete grades that semester.

Academic probation and dismissal

Academic probation: Overall GPA below 2.00 for students with 60 or more credits earned.

Dismissal: Dismissal for a grade of F in three or more 3- or 4-credit courses in the preceding 12 months, or a semester GPA below 2.00 while on probation.

The minimum cumulative GPA depends on how far through the degree a student is:

Good to know

Fairfield does not replace grades on a retake - the original grade stays in the cumulative GPA even after a course is repeated - and its scale has no D+ or D-.

Every figure here was read from Fairfield’s own registrar or catalog. Where a rule is set by an individual college rather than the institution, the page says so instead of presenting one college’s number as everyone’s.
