How Indiana State University calculates GPA
Indiana State University calculates GPA as a credit-weighted average: multiply each course’s grade points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. The detail that matters is the grade scale.
The Indiana State grade scale — what makes it specific
A+ rule: On the Indiana State scale, A+ is awarded but capped at 4.0, and the scale runs down to D- at 0.7.
Failing grade: Indiana State University uses "F" for a failing grade (0.0).
Academic standing
Cumulative GPA less than 2.0 places a student on academic warning
Latin honors at graduation
| Honor | Requirement |
|---|---|
| cum laude | 3.50 |
| magna cum laude | 3.70 |
| summa cum laude | 3.90 |
Academic probation and dismissal
Academic warning / academic separation: Cumulative GPA less than 2.0 places a student on academic warning.
Dismissal: A student on academic warning is separated if the term GPA falls below the level for their earned hours (1.7 / 2.0 / 2.2).
The minimum cumulative GPA depends on how far through the degree a student is:
| Class level | Cumulative GPA |
|---|---|
| fewer than 30 earned hours | 1.7 |
| 30-59 earned hours | 2.0 |
| 60 or more earned hours | 2.2 |

Good to know
Plus/minus grading only applies to courses taken from fall 2009 onward; courses taken before then keep half-step values (B+ = 3.5, C+ = 2.5, D+ = 1.5).
Every figure here was read from Indiana State’s own registrar or catalog. Where a rule is set by an individual college rather than the institution, the page says so instead of presenting one college’s number as everyone’s.
