How Syracuse University calculates GPA
Syracuse University calculates GPA as a credit-weighted average: multiply each course’s grade points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. The detail that matters is the grade scale.
The Syracuse grade scale — what makes it specific
A+ rule: On the Syracuse scale, there is no A+ — A = 4.0 is the top grade, and there are no plus or minus grades at all.
Failing grade: Syracuse University uses "F" for a failing grade (0.0).
Repeated courses & grade replacement
Grade-replacement rule for a repeated course is set per school/college: most (Architecture, Arts & Sciences, Maxwell, Education, Engineering, iSchool, Falk, VPA) count the higher of the two grades in GPA, while Whitman (Management) and Newhouse use the most recent grade regardless of which is higher. Both attempts remain on the transcript either way.

Dean’s List
Syracuse University names students to its Dean’s List at typically a minimum of 12 credit hours of letter grades (varies by college).
Set independently by each school/college: Arts & Sciences, Education, Engineering, iSchool and Falk require 3.400; Whitman (Management) requires 3.600; Newhouse requires 3.500; VPA requires 3.600 with 15 credits; Architecture uses a sliding scale by credit load. There is no single university-wide GPA figure.
Academic probation and dismissal
Academic probation/suspension (policy set per school/college): e.g., in the College of Engineering and Computer Science: term or cumulative GPA below 2.0 (and below 2.0 in required math/science/ECS courses).
Dismissal: e.g., in ECS: immediate suspension if fewer than 6 credits are completed in a term or term GPA falls below 1.5.
