How University of Illinois Chicago calculates GPA
University of Illinois Chicago calculates GPA as a credit-weighted average: multiply each course’s grade points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. The detail that matters is the grade scale.
The UIC grade scale — what makes it specific
A+ rule: On the UIC scale, there is no A+ — A = 4.0 is the top grade, and there are no plus or minus grades at all — only A, B, C, D and F.
Failing grade: University of Illinois Chicago uses "F" for a failing grade (0.0).
Academic standing
cumulative or UIC GPA less than 2.00/4.00
Latin honors at graduation
| Honor | Requirement |
|---|---|
| cum laude | 3.50-3.74 |
| magna cum laude | 3.75-3.89 |
| summa cum laude | 3.90+ |
Dean’s List
University of Illinois Chicago names students to its Dean’s List at a term GPA of 3.50 with 12 semester hours applicable toward degree requirements, at least 9 of which for letter grades.
College of Liberal Arts and Sciences; UIC's colleges set their own criteria
Academic probation and dismissal
Academic Notice / Dismissal: cumulative or UIC GPA less than 2.00/4.00.
Dismissal: first-term students dismissed on zero credit, GPA below 1.00/4.00, or a deficit of -15 points or more; continuing students dismissed at a deficit of -15 points or more (deficit points per credit hour: A=+2, B=+1, C=0, D=-1, F=-2).
College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, which uses a deficit-point system rather than a flat GPA cut-off

Good to know
UIC's Academic Notice/Dismissal rules (shown here for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences) use a cumulative deficit-point system (A=+2 down to F=-2, dismissal at -15) rather than a simple GPA cutoff, and both Dean's List and dismissal policy are set per college.
Every figure on this page was read from UIC’s own registrar or catalog. Where a rule is set by an individual college rather than the institution, the page says so rather than presenting one college’s number as everyone’s.
