How The University of Texas at El Paso calculates GPA
The University of Texas at El Paso calculates GPA as a credit-weighted average: multiply each course’s grade points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. The detail that matters is the grade scale.
The UTEP grade scale — what makes it specific
A+ rule: On the UTEP scale, there is no A+ — A = 4.0 is the top grade, and there is no D- — D is the lowest passing grade.
Failing grade: The University of Texas at El Paso uses "F" for a failing grade (0.0).
Repeated courses & grade replacement
For 1000-2000 level courses, the new grade replaces the old one in GPA. For 3000-4000 level courses, all attempts count.

Good to know
UTEP's repeat-course policy splits by course level: lower-division (1000-2000) retakes replace the grade in GPA, but upper-division (3000-4000) retakes count both attempts.
Sibling campuses in the same system are not a guide here. Every figure on this page was read from UTEP’s own registrar or catalog, because the campuses of this system genuinely differ — in the grading scale, in what counts when a course is repeated, and in where the honors cut-offs sit.
