How The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley calculates GPA
The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley calculates GPA as a credit-weighted average: multiply each course’s grade points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. The detail that matters is the grade scale.
The UTRGV grade scale — what makes it specific
A+ rule: On the UTRGV scale, there is no A+ — A = 4.0 is the top grade, and there is no D- — D is the lowest passing grade.
Failing grade: The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley uses "F" for a failing grade (0.0).
Repeated courses & grade replacement
For a non-repeatable course taken more than once to improve a grade, only the last/most recent grade from all completions counts toward the GPA; a resident undergraduate repeating the same class for a third time is charged the nonresident tuition rate.

Good to know
UTRGV replaces the original grade with the most recent one for GPA on a repeat, unlike sibling UT Arlington where both attempts count.
Sibling campuses in the same system are not a guide here. Every figure on this page was read from UTRGV’s own registrar or catalog, because the campuses of this system genuinely differ — in the grading scale, in what counts when a course is repeated, and in where the honors cut-offs sit.
