Scale: 0–20Method: Linear estimate (grade−10)×0.4Status: estimateUpdated: 2026-06-23
Unofficial estimate for planning only. Official applications require a WES/ECE credential evaluation; actual results vary by institution tier and course rigor.
How France grades convert to US GPA
Linear estimate from the 20-point scale: (grade − 10) × 0.4, clamped to 0–4. Note that 18–20 is extremely rare in France.
France marks out of 20. Scores of 16+ are rare; 10 is the pass mark. The 'mention' (Très Bien, Bien, Assez Bien) signals the tier.
Grade equivalents at a glance
| France grade | US GPA (est.) | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 16–20 (Très Bien) | ~3.7–4.0 | Very good (rare) |
| 14–15 (Bien) | ~3.3 | Good |
| 12–13 (Assez Bien) | ~3.0 | Fairly good |
| 10–11 (Passable) | ~2.0–2.3 | Pass |
| < 10 | 0.0 | Fail |
Is this competitive for US admission?
Because 18–20 is almost never awarded, US evaluators read French marks generously — a 14/20 is a strong result. Don't assume 14/20 = 70%. Confirm each programme's expectation.
Credential evaluation (WES / ECE)
WES converts French marks with the rarity of top scores in mind. Official transcripts from your établissement are required.
