Source & verification

University of Madras — Handbook on Integrated Common Regulations for the UG and PG Degree Programmes offered in the Affiliated Arts and Science Colleges under CBCS-2019 (UG Reg. 8–9; PG Reg. 7–8): marks→grade-point table 90–100 → 9.0–10.0 (O), 80–89 → 8.0–8.9 (D+), 75–79 → 7.5–7.9 (D), 70–74 → 7.0–7.4 (A+), 60–69 → 6.0–6.9 (A), 50–59 → 5.0–5.9 (B), 40–49 → 4.0–4.9 (C), 00–39 → 0.0 (U); CGPA = ΣΣCniGni ÷ ΣΣCni.

NO EXPLICIT CONVERSION RULE: the University's regulations never say 'percentage = CGPA × 10'. They map marks to grade points in bands whose ranges run parallel to marks ÷ 10 (90–100 → 9.0–10.0, 80–89 → 8.0–8.9, … 50–59 → 5.0–5.9), and class cut-offs line up the same way (CGPA 6.0 ↔ 60% First Class, 7.5 ↔ 75% Distinction). CGPA × 10 therefore gives the credit-weighted average percentage. STATUS 'verified' (DERIVED): the formula is derived from the University's own published grade-point table, not quoted from a conversion rule — show 'Derived from the official grade-point table' on the page with a 'confirm against your mark statement' disclaimer. Classification: CGPA 9.0–10.0 First Class – Exemplary; 7.5–<9.0 First Class with Distinction; 6.0–<7.5 First Class; 5.0–<6.0 Second Class (UG Reg. 8 also states First Class = 60% aggregate, Second = 50–<60%). PG uses the same table with 00–49 = U. The regulations cover affiliated (non-autonomous) Arts & Science colleges; autonomous colleges may modify them. MCA and the older university-department CBCS (2007-08) report Weighted Average Marks (WAM) / Overall Weighted Percentage of Marks (OWPM), i.e. a direct percentage on the mark statement — use that where printed.
