GPA vs percentage: which is better for a resume?

Neither GPA nor percentage is universally “better” for a resume — the right choice depends on who is reading it and what they expect. The goal is to present a number your audience can interpret instantly.

Match the audience

  • Indian campus and PSU recruiters often think in percentages and may require one on the form — lead with percentage there.
  • MNCs and international employers frequently expect GPA or CGPA on its scale — lead with that.
  • When unsure, show both: “CGPA 8.4/10 (79.8%)”, which covers either reader.

Always state the scale

A bare number is ambiguous. “8.4” means nothing without “/10”, and “79.8%” is self-explanatory. Stating the scale prevents a reader from misjudging a strong record.

Convert correctly
