Iran GPA
& grading scale

How the Iran grading scale works

Iranian universities grade each course 0–20; the overall result is the credit-weighted average (moadel) on the 0–20 scale. 17–20 is excellent; the minimum passing grade per course is 10 (often 12 for graduate work).

Grade scale

Grade / rangeMeaning (≈ US)
18–20Excellent / Momtaz (A+/A)
16–17.99Very Good (A-/B+)
14–15.99Good (B)
12–13.99Satisfactory (C)
10–11.99Pass / Marginal (D)
Below 10Fail (F)

Formula

Moadel = sum(course grade x credits) / sum(credits) on 0–20. US band rule (JMU/McGill anchors): 16–20 -> 4.0, 15 -> 3.7, 14 -> 3.0 (B), 12–13.99 -> 2.0 (C), 10–11.99 -> 1.0 (D).

Worked example

A 0–20 average of 16 -> 4.0; a 14 -> 3.0 (B); a 12 -> 2.0 (C) on the US 4.0 scale.
