How the Italy grading scale works
Italian universities grade exams 0–30, with 18 the minimum pass and 30 the max (30 e lode is honors). The final degree is a separate 66–110 scale combining a weighted exam average with thesis points.
Grade scale
| Grade / range | Meaning (≈ US) |
|---|---|
| 30 e lode / 30 | A (4.0) |
| 28–29 | A- (3.7) |
| 26–27 | B+ (3.3) |
| 24–25 | B (3.0) |
| 22–23 | B- (2.7) |
| 20–21 | C (2.3) |
| 18–19 | D — pass (1.7) |
| Below 18 | Fail (0.0) |
Formula
Native GPA = credit(CFU)-weighted average of exam grades on 18–30. US approximation maps each exam grade per the band table, then averages by credits.
Worked example
Exams 28, 27, 30, 24 (equal weight) -> 3.7 + 3.3 + 4.0 + 3.0 = 14.0 / 4 = ~3.5 on the US 4.0 scale.
