Netherlands GPA
& grading scale

Quick answer: Dutch grades run 1 (lowest) to 10 (highest); 6 is the minimum pass. Top marks are deliberately rare — 9s and 10s are almost never given — so an 8 is excellent. The overall result is an ECTS-credit-weighted average.

Conversions to a US 4.0 GPA are unofficial estimates for planning. Only a credential evaluation (WES, ECE, ICES) is authoritative for admissions.

How the Netherlands grading scale works

Dutch grades run 1 (lowest) to 10 (highest); 6 is the minimum pass. Top marks are deliberately rare — 9s and 10s are almost never given — so an 8 is excellent. The overall result is an ECTS-credit-weighted average.

Grade scale

Grade / rangeMeaning (≈ US)
8.0–10Excellent (A / 4.0)
7.5–7.9(A- / 3.7)
7.0–7.4(B+ / 3.3)
6.5–6.9Highly satisfactory (B / 3.0)
6.0–6.4Satisfactory — pass (C / 2.3)
Below 6.0Fail (0.0–1.0)

Formula

Native = ECTS-credit-weighted average (pass >=6). US approximation uses fixed bands because 9–10 is near-unattainable, so Dutch grades are NOT linearly scaled.

Worked example

A Dutch average of 7.6 falls in the 7.5–7.9 band -> ~3.7 on the US 4.0 scale (A-). A 7.6 is a genuinely good Dutch result.
