Nigeria GPA
& grading scale

Quick answer: Nigerian universities use a 5-point grade scale (NUC standard) where 5 is best. Each grade converts to points (A=5, B=4, C=3, D=2, E=1, F=0) and the CGPA is the credit-weighted average. Because it is a 5.0 scale, converting to a US GPA requires rescaling.

Conversions to a US 4.0 GPA are unofficial estimates for planning. Only a credential evaluation (WES, ECE, ICES) is authoritative for admissions.

How the Nigeria grading scale works

Nigerian universities use a 5-point grade scale (NUC standard) where 5 is best. Each grade converts to points (A=5, B=4, C=3, D=2, E=1, F=0) and the CGPA is the credit-weighted average. Because it is a 5.0 scale, converting to a US GPA requires rescaling.

Grade scale

Grade / rangeMeaning (≈ US)
4.50–5.00 (70%+)First Class (A)
3.50–4.49 (60–69%)Second Upper 2:1 (B)
2.40–3.49 (50–59%)Second Lower 2:2 (C)
1.50–2.39 (45–49%)Third Class (D)
Below 1.50Fail (F)

Formula

CGPA = sum(grade point x credit units) / sum(credit units) on a 5.0 max. Credential evaluators map by class band: a Nigerian First Class (4.50+) is treated as a US A (4.0), Second Upper as B, and so on.

Worked example

A CGPA of 4.50/5.00 (First Class) maps to 4.0 (A) on the US 4.0 scale under the band method.
