The Chinese University of Hong Kong
GPA calculator

Quick answer: CUHK grades each course on a 4.0 scale — there is no A+ — and averages the grade points weighted by credits. Its honours classes need two minimums at once: a Major GPA and an overall GPA (First Class: 3.50 and 3.30).

How CUHK calculates your GPA

GPA = sum of (grade point × course credits) ÷ total credits of the letter-graded courses counted.

CUHK’s public grading page does not say how a failed or repeated course is treated in the GPA; check your programme handbook.

Most CUHK courses carry 3 credits.

D is the lowest pass. DI/PA/FA (Distinction/Pass/Failure) and P/U (Pass/Failure) grades are not counted in the GPA, and neither are the grades used for the intensive language programmes.

Honours classification

CUHK classifies degrees on two averages together: the GPA of your Major courses (at the levels and choices your Faculty sets) and your overall GPA. You need both minimums below. The calculator shows your overall GPA; to check your Major GPA, run it again with only your Major courses.

The Undergraduate Examinations Board decides the class in its absolute discretion and may apply other guidelines. These are CUHK’s guidelines dated September 2020.

Converting to a US GPA or a percentage

CUHK’s documents used here give no formula for turning a GPA into a percentage. This site has no Hong Kong-to-US GPA converter; a Hong Kong GPA is already on a 4-point-style scale, but US admissions offices may re-evaluate it.
