City University of Hong Kong
CGPA calculator
Quick answer: CityU grades each course on a 4.3 scale (A+ is 4.3, and there is no D+). Failed courses count, but when you repeat a course only the latest attempt stays in the CGPA. A CGPA of 3.50 or more is First Class Honours; 3.00–3.49 is Upper Second Class Honours, 2.50–2.99 is Lower Second Class Honours, 2.00–2.49 is Third Class Honours.

How CityU calculates your CGPA
GPA = sum of (grade point × credit units) ÷ credit units of the courses counted. The semester GPA (SGPA) covers one semester; the CGPA covers every course, keeping only the latest attempt of a repeated course. CityU truncates both to two decimals rather than rounding.
You may repeat a course to recover an F or to improve a D, at most twice after the first attempt. Enter only your latest attempt of a repeated course.
Most CityU courses carry 3 credit units.
Grade points
| Grade | Grade point | CityU’s qualifier |
|---|---|---|
| A+ | 4.3 | Excellent |
| A | 4.0 | Excellent |
| A- | 3.7 | Excellent |
| B+ | 3.3 | Good |
| B | 3.0 | Good |
| B- | 2.7 | Good |
| C+ | 2.3 | Fair |
| C | 2.0 | Fair |
| C- | 1.7 | Fair |
| D | 1.0 | Marginal |
| F | 0.0 | Fail |
P, TR (credit transfer), Z (exemption), IP, I, X (late drop), WD and AU carry no grade points. A grade with an asterisk (e.g. A+*) is also left out of the GPA.
Honours classification
| CGPA | Classification |
|---|---|
| 3.50 or above | First Class Honours |
| 3.00–3.49 | Upper Second Class Honours |
| 2.50–2.99 | Lower Second Class Honours |
| 2.00–2.49 | Third Class Honours |
These are indicative guidelines; the College or School Dean classifies each award and may make exceptions. A Pass (CGPA 1.70–1.99) applies only to students admitted in 2019/20 or before. The bands do not decide the award for the cohorts described below.
Students admitted 2020/21 to 2023/24
Students on programmes of four years or more admitted from 2020/21 to 2023/24 (and Advanced Standing I and II students admitted in the matching years) receive degrees with distinction by CGPA rank within their department or school: summa cum laude for the top 2%, magna cum laude for the next 5% and cum laude for the next 8%. Their transcripts also show a “corresponding honours” from the CGPA bands above.
Graduation and Dean’s List
Students admitted from Semester A 2020/21 need a CGPA of at least 2.00 to graduate (1.70 before that). The Dean’s List takes students with 12 or more credit units, a GPA of 3.7 or above and no failures in the semester.
Converting to a US GPA or a percentage
CityU’s documents used here give no formula for turning a CGPA into a percentage. This site has no Hong Kong-to-US GPA converter; a Hong Kong GPA is already on a 4-point-style scale, but US admissions offices may re-evaluate it.
