The Education University of Hong Kong
GPA calculator

Quick answer: EdUHK grades each course on a 4.33 scale — the highest in Hong Kong, and an A+ is given only for outstanding work — and averages the grade points weighted by credit points, including failed courses. A Programme GPA of 3.40 or more is a First, 3.00 a Division I, 2.50 a Division II and 2.20 a Third, with 2.00 to 2.19 an unclassified Pass — and on teacher-education programmes the Field Experience grade has to clear a bar of its own as well.

How EdUHK calculates your GPA

GPA = sum of (grade point equivalent × credit points) ÷ total credit points attempted, counting every course attempted, failed ones included, and leaving out courses with no grade point. EdUHK works out a Semester GPA, a Year GPA, a Programme GPA and a Major Subject GPA.

The Board of Examiners may require a failed course, or one graded C- or D, to be repeated; a passed course normally cannot be retaken to raise a grade. The regulations do not say whether the original F is replaced by the repeat, so treat the GPA on your student portal as the authority.

One credit point is about one hour of teaching a week over 13 weeks, and courses normally carry 3 credit points; a full-time semester is 12 to 18 credit points.

C+2.33Satisfactory

D is the lowest grade that allows course progression. The operational grades DN, CR, PS, FL, IP, YC, IC and W carry no grade point and are left out, as are transferred and exempted courses.

Award classification

3.40 and aboveFirst Class Honours

2.50–2.99Second Class Honours, Division II
2.20–2.49Third Class Honours
2.00–2.19Pass (no honours classification)

These are the minimum Programme GPA figures in regulation 11.1, and for teacher-education programmes the GPA is only half of the test: performance in Field Experience must also reach Credit or above for a First or a Division I, and Pass or above for the classes below. Field Experience is graded distinction/credit/pass/fail and is left out of the GPA altogether, so this calculator cannot see it — clearing a band here is necessary but not sufficient. Note too that a Third starts at 2.20 rather than a round number, and that 2.00 to 2.19 is an unclassified Pass. The Board of Examiners may also add programme-specific criteria (11.2).

Postgraduate Diploma and Sub-Degree programmes

The same regulation classifies these on the Programme GPA alone, with different figures and different names: 3.40 is a Distinction, 2.70 a Credit and 2.00 a Pass. Note that the Credit threshold of 2.70 does not line up with any of the undergraduate bands.

Graduation requirements

Graduating needs the programme’s credit points, a Programme GPA of at least 2.00, at least half the programme’s credit points and half the major’s credit points taken at EdUHK, the first major completed, any Field Experience, internship or language requirement, a Major Subject GPA of at least 2.00 where the programme has a major, and the Digital Competency requirement (formerly ITCE).

Warning, probation and discontinuation

A Major Subject GPA below 2.00 brings an academic warning; a Semester GPA below 2.00 puts a student on probation for the next semester, lifted once the Semester GPA reaches 2.00. Failing to have probation lifted after two consecutive semesters normally means discontinuation, as does failing Field Experience on a programme leading to Qualified Teacher Status.

Converting to a US GPA or a percentage

EdUHK’s regulations give no formula for turning a GPA into a percentage. This site has no Hong Kong-to-US GPA converter; a Hong Kong GPA is already on a 4-point-style scale, but US admissions offices may re-evaluate it.
