Hong Kong Baptist University
cGPA calculator

Quick answer: HKBU grades each course on a 4.0 scale with minus and plus grades a third of a point apart (A- is 3.67, B+ 3.33), and averages by units attempted, including failed courses. A cGPA of 3.40 or more is First Class; 3.00–3.39 is Second Class (Division I), 2.50–2.99 is Second Class (Division II), 2.20–2.49 is Third Class.

How HKBU calculates your cGPA

GPA = grade points gained ÷ units attempted. The semester GPA covers one semester and the cumulative GPA (cGPA) all courses attempted; the units of a failed course stay in.

For students admitted from 2017–18, a failed course may be repeated up to twice (same course code) and only the highest grade counts in the cGPA. For students admitted in 2016–17 or before, every attempt counts. A cGPA of 2.00 is needed to graduate.

A unit is roughly one 50-minute class a week for a semester; most courses carry 3 units.

DT, I, S, U, W, YR, NR and PR are left out of the GPA, as is University Life. An E on the first-semester part of a year course becomes a D if the course is passed in the second semester.

3.00–3.39Second Class (Division I)
2.50–2.99Second Class (Division II)
2.20–2.49Third Class

These cGPA ranges are indicative: the Senate may make exceptions, and faculties may add their own indicators. A Pass on an Honours programme leads to the General Degree with a Pass.

General Degree designations

Where a programme offers the General Degree as its own pathway, the cGPA sets the designation instead: Degree with Distinction 3.40–4.00, Degree with Merit 2.67–3.39, Pass Degree 2.00–2.66.

Converting to a US GPA or a percentage

HKBU’s documents used here give no formula for turning a cGPA into a percentage. This site has no Hong Kong-to-US GPA converter; a Hong Kong GPA is already on a 4-point-style scale, but US admissions offices may re-evaluate it.
