The Hong Kong Polytechnic University
GPA calculator
Quick answer: Since 2020/21, PolyU grades each subject on a 4.3 scale (A+ is 4.3) and averages the grade points weighted by credits. If you retake a subject, only the final attempt counts. The honours class is decided by the Board of Examiners from a “GPA for Award”, which some programmes weight — so PolyU publishes no single set of bands.

How PolyU calculates your GPA
GPA = sum of (grade point × subject credits) ÷ total credits, as a cumulative GPA for all subjects taken and a semester GPA for one semester.
Since 2005/06 only the grade from the final attempt of a retaken subject is counted — enter just that attempt. GPAs are capped at 4.3 from 2020/21.
One PolyU credit represents about 35 to 45 hours of study.
Grade points
| Grade | Grade point | PolyU’s interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| A+ | 4.3 | Excellent |
| A | 4.0 | Excellent |
| A- | 3.7 | Excellent |
| B+ | 3.3 | Good |
| B | 3.0 | Good |
| B- | 2.7 | Good |
| C+ | 2.3 | Satisfactory |
| C | 2.0 | Satisfactory |
| C- | 1.7 | Satisfactory |
| D+ | 1.3 | Pass |
| D | 1.0 | Pass |
| F | 0.0 | Fail |
Subjects coded I, L, M (Pass with Merit), N, P, U, W or Z are left out of every GPA. A subject coded S (absent from all assessment) counts as zero.
Award classification
PolyU classifies bachelor’s degrees as First Class, Second Class (Division 1), Second Class (Division 2), Third Class Honours or Pass. The Board of Examiners decides from the GPA for Award; for some programmes this is a weighted GPA (WGPA) over the subjects that count toward the award, and the weighting is set in the programme’s own documents. That is why no university-wide bands are shown here.
Students admitted before 2020/21
From 2009/10 to 2019/20 PolyU used a different table with no minus grades: A+ 4.5, A 4.0, B+ 3.5, B 3.0, C+ 2.5, C 2.0, D+ 1.5, D 1.0, F 0.0, and every GPA was capped at 4.0. The calculator uses the current 4.3 table.
Academic probation
Since 2020/21 a GPA below 1.7 puts a student on academic probation for the following semester.
Converting to a US GPA or a percentage
PolyU’s documents used here give no formula for turning a GPA into a percentage. This site has no Hong Kong-to-US GPA converter; a Hong Kong GPA is already on a 4-point-style scale, but US admissions offices may re-evaluate it.
