CGA calculator
Quick answer: HKUST grades each course on a 4.3 scale (A+ is 4.3, and there is no D+) and calls its averages grade averages: TGA for a term, CGA overall. Its honours classes need two minimums at once: a Major CGA (MCGA) and an overall CGA (First Class: 3.600 and 3.400).
HKUST CGA calculator
How HKUST calculates your CGA
Grade average = sum of (grade point × course credits) ÷ credits of the courses that earn grade points, worked out for each term (TGA) and cumulatively (CGA).
For students admitted in 2023–24 or later, a failed course that is repeated keeps both the F and the new grade in the TGA and CGA — so enter both attempts.
Most HKUST courses carry 3 credits.
Grade points
| Grade | Grade point | HKUST’s definition |
|---|---|---|
| A+ | 4.3 | Excellent Performance |
| A | 4.0 | Excellent Performance |
| A- | 3.7 | Excellent Performance |
| B+ | 3.3 | Good Performance |
| B | 3.0 | Good Performance |
| B- | 2.7 | Good Performance |
| C+ | 2.3 | Satisfactory Performance |
| C | 2.0 | Satisfactory Performance |
| C- | 1.7 | Satisfactory Performance |
| D | 1.0 | Marginal Pass |
| F | 0.0 | Fail |
D (1.0) is the only D grade. AU, DI, PA, I, P, PP, T and W carry no grade points and are left out; an I not cleared in time becomes F.
Honours classification
HKUST uses a two-tier system for students admitted from 2018–19: you need both the minimum Major CGA (MCGA) and the minimum overall CGA below. F grades may be left out of the MCGA, but no graded course can be left out of the overall CGA. The calculator shows your overall CGA; for your MCGA, run it again with only the courses that count toward your major.
Minimum averages for each class
| Class | Minimum MCGA | Minimum overall CGA |
|---|---|---|
| First Class Honors | 3.600 | 3.400 |
| Second Class Honors, Division I | 2.850 | 2.700 |
| Second Class Honors, Division II | 2.150 | 2.000 |
| Third Class Honors | 1.700 | 1.700 |
| Pass | 0.850 | 0.850 |
World Bachelor in Business graduates receive honours degrees without a class. With more than one major, the MCGA is computed over the combined requirements of all majors.
Academic standing
A TGA or CGA below 1.7 at the end of a regular term brings academic warning. A CGA below 1.5 at the end of a Fall or Spring term (after the first) brings academic probation until it recovers to 1.5.
Converting to a US GPA or a percentage
HKUST’s documents used here give no formula for turning a CGA into a percentage. This site has no Hong Kong-to-US GPA converter; a Hong Kong GPA is already on a 4-point-style scale, but US admissions offices may re-evaluate it.
