Lingnan University
GPA calculator
Quick answer: Lingnan grades each course on a 4.0 scale with minus and plus grades a third of a point apart (A- is 3.67, B+ 3.33), and averages by credits — every course enrolled in counts, passed or failed. Its classes are minimums, not ranges: First Class Honours needs a cumulative GPA of at least 3.50, and reaching a minimum does not award that class automatically.
LU GPA calculator
How LU calculates your GPA
GPA = total weighted points ÷ total credits enrolled in, where weighted points = grade point × course credits. Lingnan works out a Term GPA, a Year GPA and a Cumulative GPA, each from 0 to 4.00.
Every course enrolled in, including summer-term courses and failed ones, counts in all three averages; exempted courses do not, and exchange grades appear on the transcript without entering the GPA. A failed course may be retaken at most twice, and a passed course may never be retaken.
Most Lingnan courses carry 3 credits; a single degree needs 120 credits and a double degree 150.
Grade points
| Grade | Grade point | Lingnan’s standard |
|---|---|---|
| A | 4.00 | Excellent |
| A- | 3.67 | Excellent |
| B+ | 3.33 | Good |
| B | 3.00 | Good |
| B- | 2.67 | Good |
| C+ | 2.33 | Fair |
| C | 2.00 | Fair |
| C- | 1.67 | Fair |
| D+ | 1.33 | Pass |
| D | 1.00 | Pass |
| F | 0.00 | Failure |
D is the lowest pass. M (Merit), VS, S, U and Pass/Fail grades carry no grade point and are left out. I (Incomplete) counts as 0 until it is replaced, and becomes an F if the work is not finished within four weeks of the preliminary results.
Degree classification
| GPA | Honours degree classification |
|---|---|
| 3.50 | First Class Honours |
| 3.00 | Upper Second Class Honours |
| 2.50 | Lower Second Class Honours |
| 2.00 | Third Class Honours |
| 1.67 | Pass |
These are the minimum cumulative GPAs for each class, not ranges, and Lingnan states that reaching one does not convert automatically into that class. A student who cannot finish through illness or other extenuating circumstances may instead be recommended for a degree with no classification.
Graduation, probation and discontinuation
Graduating needs 120 credits or more (150 for a double degree), a cumulative GPA of at least 1.67, the Integrated Learning Programme and Service-Learning, the IT Fluency Test and the English language requirement. A cumulative GPA below 1.67 puts a student on academic probation, which caps the study load until the GPA recovers. Studies are normally discontinued after a Term GPA below 1.00 in any two terms, after failing more than half the term’s credits in any two terms, after failing a required course three times, or on exceeding the maximum study period of fourteen terms.
Dean’s List and President’s List
Both need 24 credits or more in the academic year (with 12 or more in one term) and no F, Fail, U or I grade. The Dean’s List takes a Year GPA of 3.30 to 3.69 and the President’s List 3.70 or above.
Students admitted before 2020–21
The earlier regulations, for 2019–20 or earlier Year 1 intakes, use the same grade table and the same classification minimums.
Converting to a US GPA or a percentage
Lingnan’s regulations give no formula for turning a GPA into a percentage. This site has no Hong Kong-to-US GPA converter; a Hong Kong GPA is already on a 4-point-style scale, but US admissions offices may re-evaluate it.
