The University of Hong Kong
GPA calculator

Quick answer: HKU grades each course on a 4.3 scale (A+ is 4.3) and averages the grade points weighted by credits, including failed courses. A GPA of 3.60 or more is First Class Honours; 3.00–3.59 is Second Class Honours, Division One, 2.40–2.99 is Second Class Honours, Division Two, 1.70–2.39 is Third Class Honours.

How HKU calculates your GPA

GPA = sum of (grade point × course credits) ÷ total credits attempted. Every course attempted counts, including each failed course — for the semester, year, cumulative and graduation GPA alike.

A course passed with D or better cannot be repeated to raise the grade. A failed course is made up by re-assessment, resubmission, repeating it or (for electives) taking another course — and the original F still counts.

Students normally take 24 to 30 credits a semester; many courses carry 6 credits.

D is the lowest pass. Courses graded Pass, Fail or Distinction are left out of the GPA, and so are courses transferred from other institutions.

2.40–2.99Second Class Honours, Division Two
1.70–2.39Third Class Honours

The class is set by the Board of Examiners from the Graduation GPA, with every course (failed ones included) weighted by credits. The Board may award the next class up to a candidate who falls short of it by no more than 0.1. These bands do not apply to the BChinMed, BDS and MBBS curricula.

The Common Core best-five rule

For students admitted from 2025–26 who complete six 6-credit Common Core courses, the Graduation GPA counts either the five best (covering all five Areas of Inquiry) or all six, whichever gives the higher GPA. Two 3-credit Common Core Microcredentials taken in place of one course are averaged and treated as one 6-credit course. The calculator does not apply this rule; remove your weakest Common Core course to see its effect.

Progression

A student is normally recommended for discontinuation after failing 36 or more credits in two consecutive semesters, after an average Semester GPA below 1.0 for two consecutive semesters, or on exceeding the maximum period of registration (150% of the normal length).

Converting to a US GPA or a percentage

HKU’s regulations give no formula for turning a GPA into a percentage. This site has no Hong Kong-to-US GPA converter; a Hong Kong GPA is already on a 4-point-style scale, but US admissions offices may re-evaluate it.
