Nanyang Polytechnic
GPA calculator

Quick answer: NYP grades each learning unit on a 4.0 scale and averages the grade points weighted by credit value, counting only units that carry a grade point. Attendance below 75% caps a passed unit at D (1.0), and the Diploma with Merit goes to the top 10% of a course’s graduates — not to a fixed GPA.

How NYP calculates your GPA

GPA = sum of (learning unit grade point × credit value) ÷ sum of credit values, including only learning units with a grade point.

NYP’s handbook does not say how a failed unit and its repeat are both counted; use the GPA on your results slip as the authority.

Each learning unit carries a credit value; it is shown on your results in the NYP portal.

Grade points

GradeGrade pointMarks or meaning
DIST4.0Distinction, awarded by the Assessment Board
A4.080% and above
B+3.575% to <80%
B3.070% to <75%
C+2.565% to <70%
C2.060% to <65%
D+1.555% to <60%
D1.050% to <55%
NGP1.0Non-graded Pass
F0.0Below 50%
DEB0.0Debarred

P (Pass/Fail units), CP, NCP, SP, SF, AEG, AUD, DEF, EX, TRF, WDC and WDL carry no grade point — leave them out. Credits transferred with a grade, TRF(Grade), carry 1.0 to 4.0.

Diploma awards

NYP awards the Diploma with Merit to graduates in the top 10% of their diploma course who have not failed any module, chosen by the Assessment Board. The Director’s List each semester takes the top 15% of the cohort carrying a full study load (or at least 80% of one after credit transfer) with no failed module. Both are rank-based, so no GPA cut-off can be given.

Distinctions and attendance

A learning unit distinction (DIST) needs a Grade A on the first attempt and is capped at the top 5% of students taking the unit. If attendance in a unit falls below 75%, a pass in that unit is capped at D (50 marks, 1.0 grade point).

Repeats, removal and candidature

A failed core unit must be repeated; a failed elective can be repeated (up to two times) or replaced. A student can be removed for failing a core unit again on the repeat, or for a GPA below 0.8 in two consecutive semesters. The maximum candidature is twice the normal course length or one extra year, whichever is longer.

Converting to a US GPA or a percentage

The mark ranges above turn a module mark into a letter grade. NYP publishes no formula for turning a cumulative GPA into a percentage. The site’s Singapore-to-US converter is built for university grades on the 5.0 scale, so it is not applied to polytechnic GPAs.
