GPA calculator
Quick answer: NP grades each module on a 4.0 scale and averages the grade points weighted by credit units. AD, A+ and A all count as 4.0, and a failed module counts at 0 in the GPA. Pass/Fail-only modules (graded PX) and Pass with Merit (PM) carry no grade point and are left out.
NP GPA calculator
How NP calculates your GPA
Current GPA = sum of (credit units × grade points) ÷ total credit units of the semester’s graded modules.
NP’s own worked example: modules of 4, 5, 5, 4 and 2 credit units graded AD, A, B, C+ and F, plus a 3-unit PX module. The PX module is left out; the F stays in. 61 ÷ 20 = 3.05. NP’s page describes the semester (Current) GPA; it does not describe how the cumulative GPA or a retaken module is treated.
Credit units depend on the number of hours a week allocated to the module.
Grade points
| Grade | Grade point | NP’s description |
|---|---|---|
| AD | 4.0 | Distinction (about the top 5% of a module) |
| A+ | 4.0 | Excellent |
| A | 4.0 | Excellent |
| B+ | 3.5 | Very good |
| B | 3.0 | Very good |
| C+ | 2.5 | Good |
| C | 2.0 | Good |
| D+ | 1.5 | Pass |
| D | 1.0 | Pass |
| F | 0.0 | Fail |
PM (Pass with Merit) and PX (pass in modules graded only Pass or Fail) carry no grade point — leave those modules out. NP publishes no mark ranges for its grades.
Diploma awards
NP’s Assessment page sets no GPA threshold for the diploma or for awards.
Distinctions
AD is awarded to around 5% of the students who sat for a module. The cut-off mark applies to everyone who reaches it, so more than 5% can receive AD when several students share the cut-off mark.
How modules are assessed
Continuous-assessment modules are graded on daily work, projects and tests; examinable modules on coursework and an examination.
About this source
NP’s Assessment page blocks automated reading, so this page was built from a full copy of it. Everything above is taken from that page. It may contain other sections, behind its “Please select” menu, that the copy did not include.
Converting to a US GPA or a percentage
NP publishes no mark ranges for its grades and no formula for turning a GPA into a percentage. The site’s Singapore-to-US converter is built for university grades on the 5.0 scale, so it is not applied to polytechnic GPAs.
