Singapore Management University
GPA calculator

Quick answer: SMU grades every course on a 4-point scale on which an A+ is worth 4.3, and averages the grade points weighted by SMU credits. A GPA of 3.80 or more is Summa Cum Laude; 3.60–3.79 is Magna Cum Laude, 3.40–3.59 is Cum Laude, 3.20–3.39 is High Merit.

How SMU calculates your GPA

Each course carries SMU credits: 1.0 for a full course (39 contact hours a term) and 0.5 for a half course (at least 18 contact hours). The calculator weights each grade point by those credits. SMU’s public documents give the grade points but not every averaging rule — for example how retaken or pass/fail courses count — so where it matters, the GPA on your own transcript is the authority.

Because an A+ is worth 4.3, an average above 4.00 is arithmetically possible. SMU’s public documents do not say whether the cumulative GPA printed on a transcript is capped at 4.00.

SMU’s fact sheet sets a full exchange load at 4.0 SMU credits a term and a minimum of 2.0.

These are SMU’s cumulative GPA awards for bachelor’s degrees. Summa, Magna and Cum Laude are Latin awards adopted from the US system (with highest distinction, with high distinction, with distinction), and SMU describes all cum laude awards as highly selective. SMU states that they do not equate to the classes of honours awarded by universities on the British system — so a Magna Cum Laude is not an “Upper Second”.

The 4.3 A+ is still current

Several websites say SMU moved to a 4.0 maximum in AY2022/23. SMU’s own fact sheet for AY2024-25 (information correct as of 10 September 2024) still lists A+ at 4.3, so this page uses 4.3. If you were graded under a different table, use your transcript’s own grade legend.

Why SMU numbers do not compare directly with NUS or NTU

NUS, NTU and SIT use a 5.0 scale; SMU uses a 4-point one with a 4.3 top grade and different award bands. A 3.8 at SMU and a 3.8 at NUS are different results on different ladders. Do not enter an SMU GPA into a 5.0-scale converter.

Converting to a US GPA or a percentage

SMU’s fact sheet gives the mark range behind each course grade — A+ is 86 and above, D is 50 to 52, F is 49 and below. That turns one course mark into a letter; it is not a formula for turning a cumulative GPA into a percentage, and SMU publishes none. The site’s Singapore-to-US converter is built for the 5.0 scale, so it does not apply to SMU grades.
