Singapore Polytechnic
GPA calculator

Quick answer: SP grades each module on a 4.0 scale and averages the grade points weighted by credit units — including failed modules, and including non-graded passes, which count at 0.5. From 2024/2025, up to two elective modules are dropped from the final cGPA automatically if that raises it.

How SP calculates your GPA

GPA = sum of (credit units × grade point) ÷ sum of credit units. The semester GPA (sGPA) covers the modules examined that semester and the cumulative GPA (cGPA) every module examined so far — in both, failed modules are included.

A module you fail stays in the cGPA at 0.0 even after you pass it on the retake, so enter every attempt as its own row. Passed modules cannot be retaken.

Credit units vary by module; SP’s own worked example uses modules of 2 to 5 credit units. Your results slip in SP’s E-Services lists each module’s credit units.

Grade points

GradeGrade pointDescriptor and marks
DIST4.0Distinction, awarded by the Examinations Board (above 80)
A4.0Excellent (80 and above)
B+3.5Very Good (75 to <80)
B3.0Good (70 to <75)
C+2.5Good Credit (65 to <70)
C2.0Credit (60 to <65)
D+1.5Good Pass (55 to <60)
D1.0Pass (50 to <55)
D-0.5Subsidiary Pass (45 to <50)
P0.5Non-Graded Pass
F0.0Fail
ABS0.0Absent

UP and UF (pass or fail in a module with no grade point) and EX (exempted) carry no grade point — leave them out. A clear pass in a module needs 50% overall.

Diploma awards

SP’s grading page does not set a GPA threshold for the diploma or for awards. To be awarded the diploma, a student must pass all core modules and enough electives to reach the course’s required credit units.

Electives dropped to raise your final cGPA

From academic year 2024/2025, in a student’s final phase SP’s system automatically excludes up to two elective modules from the cGPA — but only if leaving them out improves it. The excluded electives and their grades still appear on the results slip and transcript. The calculator above does not do this for you: to see the effect, remove your weakest one or two electives.

Students admitted before 2004/2005

Grade points apply only to students who entered SP from academic year 2004/2005. Earlier students have no grade points on their result slips or transcripts, and were graded DIST, A, B, C, D, E (a discretionary subsidiary pass), F and P without a GPA.

Repeats, duration and removal

A student who fails a core or option module stays in that stage and repeats only the failed modules; a failed elective can be replaced with another elective. The maximum time allowed is twice the course length — six years for a three-year course. A student is removed from the course for failing a module again on the repeat, or for a semestral average below 35% at one sitting.

Converting to a US GPA or a percentage

The mark ranges above turn a module mark into a letter grade. SP publishes no formula for turning a cumulative GPA into a percentage. The site’s Singapore-to-US converter is built for university grades on the 5.0 scale, so it is not applied to polytechnic GPAs.
