How American University calculates GPA
American University calculates GPA as a credit-weighted average: multiply each course’s grade points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. The detail that matters is the grade scale.
The American University grade scale — what makes it specific
A+ rule: On the American University scale, there is no A+ — A = 4.0 is the top grade, and there are no plus or minus grades at all.
Failing grade: American University uses "F" for a failing grade (0.0).
Repeated courses & grade replacement
Students get a maximum of three attempts to pass a course. Separately, a Course Grade Replacement may be requested for up to two eligible courses with an original grade of C- or lower; only the second grade is computed in the cumulative GPA.
Academic standing
cumulative GPA falls below 2.00; must maintain a term GPA of 2.33 while on probation
Latin honors at graduation
| Honor | Requirement |
|---|---|
| cum laude | 3.67-3.80 |
| magna cum laude | 3.81-3.90 |
| summa cum laude | 3.91 or higher |
Dean’s List
American University names students to its Dean’s List at a term GPA of 3.67 with 12 completed A-F credit hours, in fall, spring or summer alike.
Academic probation and dismissal
Academic probation / academic dismissal: cumulative GPA falls below 2.00; must maintain a term GPA of 2.33 while on probation.
Dismissal: cumulative GPA after attempting/completing 24 credits falls below 1.00, or fails to reach 2.00 cumulative GPA within probation limit (2-3 terms).

Good to know
Every figure here was read from American University’s own registrar or catalog. Where a rule is set by an individual college rather than the institution, the page says so instead of presenting one college’s number as everyone’s.
