How Appalachian State University calculates GPA
Appalachian State University calculates GPA as a credit-weighted average: multiply each course’s grade points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. The detail that matters is the grade scale.
The App State grade scale — what makes it specific
A+ rule: On the App State scale, there is no A+ — A = 4.0 is the top grade, and the scale runs down to D- at 0.7.
Failing grade: Appalachian State University uses "F" for a failing grade (0.0).
Repeated courses & grade replacement
Automatic grade forgiveness on the first four repeated courses: the original grade stays on the transcript but is excluded from the GPA (hours still count as attempted). Limited to once per course; students may opt out via an exception form.
Academic standing
cumulative GPA below 2.00
Latin honors at graduation

Dean’s List
Appalachian State University names students to its Dean’s List at a term GPA of 3.45 (12-14 credit hours) or 3.25 (15+ credit hours) with 12 hours of coursework on which grade points are computed.
Academic probation and dismissal
Academic probation / suspension: cumulative GPA below 2.00.
Dismissal: suspension after two probation semesters without reaching 2.00; a 0.0 GPA in the first full-time semester is immediate suspension (no probation first).

Good to know
Every figure here was read from App State’s own registrar or catalog. Where a rule is set by an individual college rather than the institution, the page says so instead of presenting one college’s number as everyone’s.
