How Berklee College of Music calculates GPA
Berklee College of Music calculates GPA as a credit-weighted average: multiply each course’s grade points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. The detail that matters is the grade scale.
The Berklee grade scale — what makes it specific
A+ rule: On the Berklee scale, there is no A+ — A = 4.0 is the top grade, and there are no plus or minus grades at all.
Failing grade: Berklee College of Music uses "F" for a failing grade (0.0).
Repeated courses & grade replacement
A retake replaces the grade for GPA purposes: only the highest grade is computed in cumulative GPA, though the earlier grade is not erased from the record.
Academic standing
cumulative GPA below 2.00, or credit completion rate below 70%, or inability to graduate within 150% of normal credits
Latin honors at graduation
| Honor | Requirement |
|---|---|
| cum laude | 3.50-3.69 |
| magna cum laude | 3.70-3.84 |
| summa cum laude | 3.85-4.00 |
Dean’s List
Berklee College of Music names students to its Dean’s List at a term GPA of 3.60 with minimum 6 credits per semester, with no grades below B and no Incomplete or Withdrawal marks.
Academic probation and dismissal
Academic probation / dismissal (satisfactory academic progress): cumulative GPA below 2.00, or credit completion rate below 70%, or inability to graduate within 150% of normal credits.
Dismissal: failure to follow an academic recovery plan after being placed on probation for the above reasons.

Good to know
Despite being a conservatory-style music school, Berklee does award fixed-GPA Latin honors and a Dean's List; its Dean's List requires no grade below a B, not just a high GPA.
Every figure here was read from Berklee’s own registrar or catalog. Where a rule is set by an individual college rather than the institution, the page says so instead of presenting one college’s number as everyone’s.
