How Boston College calculates GPA
Boston College calculates GPA as a credit-weighted average: multiply each course’s grade points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. The detail that matters is the grade scale.
The Boston College grade scale — what makes it specific
A+ rule: On the Boston College scale, there is no A+ — A = 4.0 is the top grade, and the scale runs down to D- at 0.67.
Failing grade: Boston College uses "F" for a failing grade (0.0).
Repeated courses & grade replacement
If a failed course is retaken, both the F and the new grade count in the cumulative GPA. If a passed course is retaken, the repeat grade also counts in the GPA but the course does not count again toward degree credit. (Connell School of Nursing requires C- or better in designated nursing courses or the course must be retaken.)
Academic standing
Cumulative GPA below 1.667 (Morrissey College)
Latin honors at graduation
| Honor | Requirement |
|---|---|
| summa cum laude | 3.9-4.0 |
| magna cum laude | 3.8-3.899 |
| cum laude | 3.667-3.799 |
Dean’s List
Boston College names students to its Dean’s List at a term GPA of 3.500 with 12 credits of letter-graded coursework.
Confirmed for the Morrissey College of Arts & Sciences (MCAS) only; the Carroll School of Management's own FAQ defers Dean's List criteria to a separate Student Services policy without giving numbers, so this is not confirmed university-wide.
Academic probation and dismissal
Academic probation: Cumulative GPA below 1.667 (Morrissey College).
Dismissal: Academic withdrawal if cumulative GPA stays below 1.667; students on probation must complete 12+ graded MCAS credits and earn a 2.0+ semester GPA to continue..

Good to know
The 1.667 probation threshold and 3.5/12-credit Dean's List rule are specific to the Morrissey College of Arts & Sciences (BC's largest undergraduate school); other BC undergraduate schools set their own standards separately.
Every figure here was read from Boston College’s own registrar or catalog. Where a rule is set by an individual college rather than the institution, the page says so instead of presenting one college’s number as everyone’s.
